The story takes place in her home where she is physically writing her name in all sorts of furniture. The overall conflict is about a young girl who strives to be the complete opposite of her mother. “Alvarez, like these authors, has altered contemporary American literature by stretching the literary cartography of the Americas.” Because of this she has become an example for future modern writers. Dusting is a short poem written by Julia Alvarez. As a Latin- American, I like how Alvarez manages to mix both cultures into a new writing style. In the perspective essay, I thought it was interesting how Alvarez responded to the statements on returning to writing in her native language. Scott, que pena!” (line 31, Queens) brought the reality that they still used their language to my mind. I thought the description of the neighborhood that they lived in was interesting and that the line “ Ay Mrs. For example, “the dining table in script, scrawled/ in capitals on the backs of chairs/ practicing signatures like scales” (lines 3-5, Dusting ) The way that those lines were worded showed the innocence of the speaker and reminded me of the carefree things my siblings do. Unfortunately, that happens too often with almost every parent.I connected with the poem Dusting because it conveyed that there is beauty in performing the smallest of actions. This doesn’t mean that they don’t have a good relationship it just complicates it. The father probably has to work a lot and doesn’t spend enough time with his son. When the father dances the son to his bed he clings on to his shirt as a sign for him not to leave him. As soon as the father is home the boy is excited to his father which means he probably doesn’t see him often. “ The he waltzed me off to bed still clinging to your shirt” this line gives us an insight to their relationship. First 5 stanzas explains how a girl followed her mother around tracing letters in the dust her mother wipes away. In the poem, he writes about how his father would come home drunk and dance him off to bed. In Julia Alvarez's poem she uses:imagery, off-rhymes, metaphors to create an impression in our heads. My Papa’s Waltz by Theodore Roethke shows the relationship between a little boy and his father. This poem shows how complex their relationship is and how different they are from each other. Her mother missed her chance to leave a mark but for Alvarez, it’s not too late. Dusting, for instance, describes the mother erasing the daughters fingerprints with her. “ But I refuse with every mark to be like her anonymous” this quote represents how she wants to be known, unlike her mom who wants to remain anonymous. Alvarez, Julia published on by Oxford University Press. Her mom erases any trace there is of her while Alvarez writes her name on every surface she can. This poem can be interpreted in many ways but to me, it seems like Alvarez wants to leave a legacy behind unlike her mom. In her poem, she writes about how she would write her name on dusty surfaces but her mom would always come and dust her name off. Īn example of a mother relationship daughter is the poem Dusting by Julia Alvarez. There needs to be a good balance of both to maintain a healthy relationship. A parent that is a little too much of those can drive a child away. When a parent is too strict it can make the child feel trapped and feel like they can’t do anything. Not every child like their parents hovering over them every second. A parent can be too strict and overprotective making them a helicopter parent.

Parents can try too hard to relate to their child that it might make them distant. It’s the same way for a father and a son. A mother may try too hard to relate with her daughter because she has gone through similar things. A mother-daughter relationship and a father-son relationship are very difficult. No everyone gets along with their parents. Parent-child relationships are complicated.
